Chicago Tribune Closing

After over a century of printing out news, the Chicago Tribune has announced it's closing. Instead, it will be replaced with a 24-hour news deck that will service Chicago Tribune websites.  Tribune Managing Editor James Oshea says that this is important because the website and breaking news are becoming more important. I agree with this and think that it is more practical to use a website. Today's technology makes access to information quick and easy. Breaking news is now able to be up minutes after it happens. Although it will be sad not to see Chicago Tribune in print, I feel that with the current bankruptcy issue it is necessary to take new action.

Public Relations Definition

Dear Friend,
When I started my freshman year at Marquette University I had no idea what I wanted to pursue as a career. Now, as a junior, I could not be happier with my decision to major in Public Relations. The media has a lot of control on society, so it is understandable that people distrust it. Even so, I feel that once you have a clear idea of what Public Relations is you will have a new respect for it.
Public Relations has no specific definition. Because it means something different to each individual I feel that it can cause confusion. For me, Public Relations is a communication between businesses and the public. It is public relations that contact the news and press to run positive stories about a company.
Public Relations handles important issues such as the environment, politics, and recalls. Many believe that Public Relations "spins" stories, but in all reality it advises companies to do things in their best interest. Also, please note that not all public relations companies are the same.
Public Relations is no different from other businesses. This is because they always follow a plan. It is the opposite of advertising because the ads printed about the company are not being paid for. Because of this, the story has more credibility. Although sometimes you need to make news to get news, the information must be error free!
Overall, Public Relations requires that you meet with press, host events, and be an accomplished public speaker.

Sincerely,
Lauren Lazzara

What Writing Means to Me

Writing is a way to communicate ideas and express myself. With writing, I am able to entertain, explain information and express my feelings. Writing is a major part of my life. Whether through papers, e-mails, or blogs, writing enables me to express my experiences and opinions. It allows for communication.

Writing is an important profession. With out it, we would have no newspapers, books, or magazines etc.. I look forward to joining the writing profession through public relations. Right now, I am a public relations assistant for MUSG. My job is to write press releases for different events going on around campus. I enjoy writing and the time flies by at work because of it.
